This scan is specifically for parents who have been diagnosed with a cleft or palate abnormality in their unborn baby.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a Wellbeing Scan. Please book your Wellbeing Scan separately (please click here to be redirected to the Wellbeing Scan booking page).

The best time to come for this scan is between 25 – 32 weeks. Dr Penman holds appointments for cleft scanning on Thursdays at 11.45am or 12.15noon.

At your Cleft Scan appointment, Dr Penman will focus on your baby’s face. He will use 3D scanning so you can see a 3D image of your baby’s face before he or she is born. He will take still images of your baby for you to keep but also to give invaluable information to surgeons who will be performing the corrective surgery on your baby after he or she is born.

Having an idea of what your baby will look like can help enormously in bonding with your baby. It can be a shock and surprise to find out that your baby will have a facial abnormality, but it is one that can easily be repaired. Today, the surgery is performed to such a high standard that, as your baby grows, the scar will become less and less visible, such as in the images shown here.

How Much Is The Scan?

This scan would normally cost £180 but Dr Penman only charges £20.

Of the £20 deposit you pay when you book a cleft appointment, Dr Penman donates £10 to SmileTrain.

SmileTrain are a charity that offers treatment and surgery to children around the world, in developing countries who otherwise would never be able to have any corrective surgery and have to live a life of isolation and despair. These kids get to live a normal life. We feel that it is an ideal charity for us to be associated with and with your help we can help kids like Byamunga!
