What are the Causes of Lower Abdominal Pain in Women?

Lower abdominal pain is a common experience for many women, and the culprit can range from everyday digestive issues to more specific female reproductive problems. Here’s a breakdown of some potential causes:

Female Reproductive Issues:

  • Menstrual Cramps: Pain during menstruation (period cramps) is caused by contractions in the uterus as it sheds its lining. This is a typical experience for many women.
  • Ovulation: Some women experience ovulation pain, a sharp or throbbing pain on one side of the lower abdomen around mid-cycle when an egg is released.
  • Endometriosis: This condition involves tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus, causing pelvic pain, especially during menstruation.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): An infection of the female reproductive organs can cause severe lower abdominal pain, along with abnormal vaginal discharge and fever.

Other Potential Causes:

  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): This infection often leads to a burning sensation when urinating, frequent urination, and lower abdominal pain.
  • Appendicitis: Inflammation of the appendix, located in the lower right abdomen, can cause severe pain that worsens with movement.
  • Ovarian Cyst: Fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries can cause pain, especially if they rupture or grow large.
