What is Novasure Endometrial Ablation?

Novasure endometrial ablation effectively reduces or even eliminates your periods entirely. For almost 80% of women, menstrual bleeding is successfully reduced or stopped within one year following a Novasure endometrial ablation.  A NovaSure Endometrial Ablation is a treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. It is an ideal treatment that has a very short recovery time, so no missed days from work, but the problem of your heavy periods are cured without having to undergo a hysterectomy that brings several weeks of recovery. Tranexamic acid and also Mirena IUCD are also potential treatments for heavy periods and Dr Penman will discuss this with you.

Dr Penman has been performing NovaSure Endometrial Ablations for over 10 years and offers this a very successful treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding in women who have completed their families as the procedure ablates the endometrial lining. This means that following the procedure you will have very significantly lighter menses and in a lot of cases, no periods at all.

What Are The Benefits Of A NovaSure Endometrial Ablation?

  • The procedure is quick – involves a short general anaesthetic as a day case.
  • There are no incisions or cuts to your abdomen.
  • There is no pre-treatment medication
  • Very light menses or none at all following the procedure
  • A rapid recovery time, so back to normal within a day or two.
  • One time procedure.

Is NovaSure Right for me?

Any woman who has completed her family and is suffering with heavy, prolonged menses are ideal candidates for this procedure. The procedure requires a normal shaped and sized uterine cavity so there will be a small percentage of women that cannot be treated with this procedure.  Dr Penman performs a hysteroscopy at the start of the procedure (a small fibreoptic camera) to check the shape and size of the uterine cavity before he starts the NovaSure.

Can I Still Become Pregnant After the NovaSure Procedure?

Highly unlikely, because the NovaSure ablates (treats) the endometrium and heals with scar tissue that does not respond to hormones, so no periods, or very light (depending on whether the ablation has reached all endometrium). This therefore reduces the chance of a pregnancy to almost nothing, however if you are sexually active, a contraceptive is recommended.

What Can I Expect After the NovaSure Procedure?

On waking from the anaesthetic, you may feel some light period like cramps, or nothing at all. Most women get back to normal within a day or so. Dr Penman will give you instructions for your recovery.  You may experience a light, watery discharge following the procedure but this is all normal. You may notice this straight away or within a few days of your procedure. It will be brief. You may have intermittent discharge/light flow, for a couple of months but this will slow and is all normal following an endometrial ablation procedure.

.

Are There Any Risks I Should Know About?

Dr Penman will discuss the risks of the procedure with you. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks such as perforation of the uterus, bleeding, and infection but the rate of problems is less than 0.05%

What Will My Periods be Like After the NovaSure Procedure?

Everyone is different, so it is difficult to predict what your periods are likely to be. If you plan to give yourself 3 months to resume a normal cycle, by which time you will have a good idea how your menses will be. Most women have no bleeding and some have very light periods indeed.
