Cervical Screening

A cervical screening (commonly referred to as a smear test) is a routine check for HPV, a virus that can cause cervical cancer.
Taking just a few minutes, a vaginal swab to obtain a sample of cells, this may feel uncomfortable but shouldn’t be painful. Cells are then sent to the lab to be checked for abnormalities.
For peace of mind, a professional chaperone will be present at all cervical screenings.
Results are typically available within a week and will be communicated to you via Phone or Email.
It is recommended that all women aged 18-64 should have a cervical screening every 3-5 years.

PolYP Removal

Gynaecology Treatments & Surgeries
Below are a series of procedures and surgeries that are carried out regularly by Dr Penman at The Spire Alexandra Hospital in Walderslade.
If you are intending to use Health Insurance to fund your surgery please read here.
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a special X-ray test that checks the shape of the uterus and whether the fallopian tubes are open, helping diagnose infertility by revealing blockages or abnormalities like fibroids, polyps, or adhesions that can prevent pregnancy. During the procedure, a contrast dye is injected through the cervix, filling the uterus and tubes, allowing Dr Penman to see their outlines and flow on X-rays, confirming if tubes are patent (open).
Most patients will find that after some rest they will resume normal activities the same day.
Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is an examination of the inside of your womb (uterus) using a narrow, tube-like telescope called a hysteroscope. This instrument is very slim (about 3 to 5mm in diameter). It’s carefully passed through the vagina and cervix and into the womb.
A hysteroscopy procedure enables doctors to see your womb to investigate the potential cause for any gynaecological symptoms you might be experiencing.
Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a permanent operation to remove the uterus (womb) which will prevent the ability to become pregnant and/or menstrate. Depending on why the surgery is needed it may also involve removing fallopian tubes/ovaries.
In most cases you would require to spend 2-4 days in the care of the hospital before going home.
The most common reasons why a woman may choose to undergo a hysterectomy are Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Ovarian Cancer, Heavy Periods & Fibroids.
Novasure Endometrial Ablation

The novasure endometrial ablation is a procedure performed under a short general anaesthetic and used for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding which effects your physcial health and day to day activities.
The procedure generally takes around 30 minutes and is usually conducted under a general anaesthetic. Most techniques involve inserting a thin telescope through the vagina and into the cervix where surgical instruments are used to destroy or remove the womb lining.
Novasure Myomectomy

Fibroids are overgrown muscle fibres in the uterus and can be the cause of painful and excessive menstrual bleeding. Myomectomy surgery can be carried out either vaginally or abdominally to remove these fibroids & reduce symptoms.
Unlike a hysterectomy, the uterus is kept intact so chances of pregnancy after the treatment is still possible.
Laparoscopy Q390

A Diagnostic Laparoscopy is keyhole surgery used to help diagnose symptoms of gynaecological conditions or to perform minor gynaecological surgery such as the removal of ovarian cysts, taking an ovarian biopsy or treating endometriosis.
Laparoscopy Q3800

A therapeutic Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions within the abdomen and pelvic region through a series of small incisions. If abnormalities are found (e.g., adhesions, endometriosis, tumors), they can be treated immediately during the same procedure.
